On the one-month anniversary of our inaugural Health Equity in Action Summit on February 19, 2025, we officially launched the Harris Health Sheila Jackson Lee Center for Accelerating Health Equity (CArE), named in honor of the late Congresswoman who was a passionate advocate for health, justice, and our communities.
The energy in the room was palpable as more than 120 attendees from diverse backgrounds came together with a shared commitment to addressing health inequities in our community. The powerful words of Erica Lee Carter, daughter of Sheila Jackson Lee, former Congressional representative, and current Director of Policy at Harris County Precinct One, who reminded us all: "May we rededicate ourselves to the mission to ensure that every individual regardless of race, gender, or socioeconomic status can access the healthcare they need, and so fervently deserve." Her call to action perfectly encapsulates the spirit of our work and the legacy of Congresswoman Jackson Lee who we honor through CArE.
We encourage you to watch this short video that captures the essence of our event: Health Equity in Action Summit Highlights.
As we work together to address inequities in Harris County, we recognize these challenges require a collaborative, community-driven approach. If you have immediate questions or ideas to share, please reach out to us at care@harrishealth.org.
With deep gratitude and hope for our shared future,
Chethan Bachireddy, MD, MSc, FACP, FASAM, AAHIVS
